Why Is Subsidiary Alliance Working So Well In India?

Subsidiary Alliance in India is one of the very few exceptions that are recognized by the British Raj in India, during the time of Empire. Subsidiary Alliance, as defined by the Raj, was a treaty between the British East India Company and the Indian princely state, by virtue of which both the companies lost their complete sovereign authority to the English.

It was also a significant process which led to the formation of the British Empire in India. It was also the main factor that brought about the close relationship between India and the United Kingdom, which in turn led the two countries to come together in what is today known as the Indian Association.

Function of a subsidiary

The main function of a subsidiary alliance in India was to give the British an opportunity to exploit resources that belonged to a third country. Under such a situation, it was not difficult for the English rulers to make use of their superior manpower and resources and take care of their economic interests in other countries that were not under their direct rule

In fact, the main motive behind the formation of subsidiary corporations in India, was the desire to help the British rulers and industries to exploit resources without having to go through the cumbersome procedures of incorporating that country. Subsidiary corporations in India were also formed to protect the interests of the foreign investors from losing their investment in the Indian market.

Today, the main political influence of subsidiary alliance system is evident in the federal structure of India, in which there are many autonomous states. Though the Indian states are free and sovereign, they still follow the British system of governance.

In the same way, even though the subordinate alliances are functioning in the Indian states, the federal structure still follows the British model. So, the fundamental question that why the British system of governance dominates over all the states in India-regardless of whether they are autonomous or not-is still unanswered.

But we can be sure of one thing-when the political power of the British rulers is combined with the massive social support that was provided to them by their people, you can be sure that they will continue to rule India for as long as they want to.
